Pipes and Tubes

  Pipes and Tubes

A pipe is a tube-shaped section or hollow cylinder, usually but not necessarily of circular cross-section, used mainly to pass on substances which can flow, liquids and gases (fluids), slurries, powders and masses of small solids. A tube, or tubing, is a long empty cylinder used for moving fluids (liquids or gases) or to shield electrical or optical cables and wires.
In scientific terms, a tube or pipe is a cylindrical, hard empty body which usually has a round cross-section but can also be oval, square, rectangular or more complex in profile. It is used on the one hand to convey liquid, gas and solid matter etc. Whatever its purpose, the term covers all sizes and diameters, from the smallest needle pipes to wind tunnels.

Further more to liquids and gases, solid matter, broken down, as dust or mixed with water in slurry form, is also pumped through pipelines. Sand, gravel or even iron ore can be transported in this manner. Pneumatic transportation of dust, grain, and chips through pipes is also a widespread practice. Pneumatic tube conveyors, which similarly work with air, are another important mode of carrying solid matter.

In plant production, steel tube is used to make shelves, worktables, ladders and subframes for equipment and plant. Steel tube as a construction element has its role into precision components for machinery and equipment. Shafts and rolls or pneumatics and cylinders in hydraulics are just two examples. Beyond these applications, a great volume of steel tube is utilized in the cycle industry, camping equipment manufacture, the furniture industry, vehicle and car making and the domestic appliances industry.
